Friday Things
1. Joseph had his first bout with strep throat last weekend, ugh! He started complaining of a sore throat Saturday afternoon, went to bed with a low-grade fever, and by Sunday mid-afternoon his fever was over 103 and he was complaining of being sore all over. Off to Childrenโs express we went and sure enough, strep throat. Two doses of antibiotics and less than 18 hours later, he was back to his normal selfโฆ kids are so resilient! *knock on wood* no one else has fallen victim (yet?).
2. Dominic totally lives his best life on Mondays and Fridays, running errands with me and getting some one-on-one time. HE. LOVES. IT. Especially Fridays since I let him get a snack after swim class and he usually asks for a cookie so sweetly at the grocery store that I canโt say no ;-)
3. Isabelle is standing up constantly nowโฆ sheโs only let go once for a few seconds and isnโt totally surfing yet, so I think walking is still a bit away, but sheโs absolutely loving being able to interact more with her brothers :)

5. A few months ago, I was going through my grandmaโs recipes and snapped some pictures of her old recipe cards from the 1950โs. 8. Last Friday night, my husband and I went to see Jerry Seinfeld and HE. WAS. HYSTERICAL. We absolutely loved the show; it was all material we hadnโt heard before, and no joke, my face hurt from laughing so hard for so long. If youโre a fan and he has a show in a city near you, I highly recommend!

My Mother-in-law passed away shortly before Christmas in 2013. That year we were not in a celebratory mood, but the following year we were looking for ways to celebrate her presence. A small business local to me had advertised cutting boards engraved with recipes for sale. You send them a jpg scan of the recipe card and then their laser cutting machine recreates the entire card on a board. We attempted to go through her files and find recipes that she had either made with or made for each sibling. It was tough to find ones that were in her actual handwriting rather than typed or photocopied from someone else. They really turned out neat though and definitely evoked many memories of her when they were opened!

Years ago I read a story about a family in which the mother was either hospitalized for an extended period of time or had died. ย The father hired a woman to cook and clean, but was worried about what she would serve the family. ย Night after night she served foods they liked prepared just the way they liked them. ย He finally asked how she was able to do this. ย She had gone through the motherโs recipe box and picked the recipes with the most spots and stains. ย

When my two cousins got married and then when I got married, my mom put together a recipe box of handwritten recipes from generations of women in our family. She made copies and laminated them. She also asked us to write some recipes that we each love and asked my mother in law and her sisters to share some hand written recipes. Iโll be able to pass them down to my daughter one day. It was a wonderful gift.
